Our History
- 1971 – Founded in Ocala, Florida, by John Hagood with financial backing from his father, Dr. Scott Hagood. Inspired by the calming effect plants had on dental patients, John pioneered the innovative idea of leasing interior plants to commercial businesses.
- 1978 – Partnership formed with John Blaser, combining forces to establish Foliage Design Systems West Coast in Sarasota, Florida. This move expanded services to major areas including Tampa and Naples.
- 1980 – Formation of the Foliage Design Systems Franchise Company, Inc., co-founded by John Hagood and John Blaser, addressing the growing demand and expanding geographical reach of their unique plant services.
- Mid-1980s – Establishment of the Franchise Advisory Council (now known as the Franchise Executive Council) to ensure continuous improvement and collaboration with franchise owners, emphasizing a supportive business community.
- 1989 – NASA research scientist Dr. Bill Wolverton elevated the industry by publishing influential studies recognizing plants’ role in improving indoor air quality by reducing harmful VOCs. This scientific validation significantly boosted awareness and credibility for indoor plant installations.
- 1995 – A milestone year with corporate restructuring and strategic growth, appointing David Liu as Vice-President/General Manager of Franchise Operations. Headquarters were relocated from Ocala to Orlando, Florida, to better serve expanding markets.
- 1998 – David Liu took the helm as President, providing fresh direction and energy, and fostering growth and innovation within Foliage Design Systems.
- 2001 – Appointment of Michael K. Lewis as Executive Vice President and National Director of Sales & Marketing, bringing over 22 years of industry expertise. His leadership expanded Foliage Design Systems’ national reach and strengthened relationships with franchise members.
- 2010s to Present – Embraced innovative biophilic design trends, becoming an industry leader in green walls and moss wall installations, continuously pushing forward the boundaries of sustainable, healthy indoor environments.
- 2021 – Celebrated a successful 50-year milestone, recognized nationwide for professional plant care, innovative products, and dedication to improving indoor spaces for businesses and communities.
- 2022 – Foliage Design Systems was acquired by Botanical Designs, becoming a valued subsidiary within the Botanical Designs family of brands, alongside McCaren Designs and Greenwalls.com. This strategic consolidation transitioned the company from 25 franchise locations to four core branches: Jacksonville, Orlando, Tampa, and Atlanta. Although streamlined, FDS continues to deliver nationwide service and expertise through the extended family of brands.
Today and Beyond: As part of the Botanical Designs family, Foliage Design Systems remains committed to innovation, quality, and excellence—proudly shaping inspiring indoor environments and promoting healthier spaces nationwide.
